Meet Peter Suart at Kubrick by mandyso

Filed under: [events] meet the creators

Sunday 26 August 2007
3 – 4pm
Kubrick Bookstore at Yau Ma Tei

Suart is an illustrator, a writer, a musician and a theatrical performer. His Tik and Tok series of books is written and illustrated for children and for adults. The stories are built on perplexing questions in life: What is real? How should we live? Where is meaning to be found? Are you free for tea on Thursday?
Five new Tik and Tok books have been published in recent months. North is the seventh in the series and deals with whaling and the far north. The Black Book of Falling is the first black and white full-length strip cartoon. Three early titles — The Storm, The Love of Learning, The Secret of the Universe — have appeared in Chinese, translated by Sunny Pang, the choreographer/linguist with whom Suart has collaborated on performances over many years.

Suart was raised in Hong Kong. He schooled and studied illustration in England before returning to Hong Kong to work in art, music and theatre. The band he co-founded with Kung Chi Shing, ‘the box’, will be performing their twentieth anniversary show Bluebeard in September at the Kwai Tsing Theatre.

Suart will talk for about half an hour on his current projects, in English and Cantonese, after which questions will be most welcome.

GreeNose ZaZaki joined two authors from IPHK at the Hall 1 Presentation Booth to talk about his new book, Papa’s Forest Bus. Must admit that there were more people there than expected, which was great! He got two questions as well and in the end, one of the audience members went up to the MCCM booth to get a book and his signature.

The Black Book of Falling – a comic book exhibition by Peter Suart

This is Tik and Tok’s first adventure in strip cartoon format. On page one they find their way out of a black hole into a bewildering world where they fall from one predicament into another, meeting a cast of strange people and encountering perennial human problems ??? Where are we going? How should we live? How does violence arise? What does it all mean?

Suart has looked at many of the cartoon greats’ Tintin, Asterix, Calvin and Hobbes, the Moomins and Little Nemo in Slumberland’ and has used many of the standard devices of the language of cartooning: the speech and think bubble, the materialised noise, the half-face close-up, the fisheye lens view, the silhouette, multiple perspectives, the nimbus round the head to signify presence or surprise.

The exhibition comprises fifty-eight black and white pages of dip pen and Indian ink drawings.

Date: 16/3 (Fri) -15/4 (Sun)
Time: 10am-8pm
Venue: 4/F Pao Gallery, Hong Kong Arts Centre

Suart will talk on twenty-six topics including: Celebrity, The Call of the North, Don Quixote and Self-reference, Moby Dick and Nineteenth Century Whaling, Frankenstein, Cuddly Penguins, Polar Expeditions, Arcadia, and Global Warming. Oh, and What is Properly a Children??? Book in a Time of Global Peril.

The Illustrator and the Cartoonist – Talk by Peter Suart

Illustration and Strip Cartooning are distinct but related practices. Both are considered, spuriously, poor relations of Art. Peter Suart’s author, illustrator and Johnny-come-lately strip cartoonist will show slides of work by illustrators (Rackham, Dulac, Nielsen, Clarke), cartoonists (Herge, Uderzo, McCay, Watterson) and artists in the middle (Jansson, Beardsley, Heath Robinson). He will also look at his own Tik and Tok strip cartoon adventure The Black Book of Falling.

Date: 25/3 (Sun)
Time: 3pm-4:30pm
Venue: Agnes b. CINEMA
